Since March of 1999, Grace Fellowship has been distributing Second Harvest food and USDA commodities to needy families in Phelps County. Currently, about 1,200 people are being helped each third Saturday of the month by a team of volunteers from this church and other churches and organizations in the community.

The Wednesday before the third Saturday of the month, a volunteer takes a Ryder truck from Rolla to Columbia's Central Missouri Food Bank to load up with 15,000 pounds of whatever food is available. That might include anything from frozen pizza to fresh vegetables to potato chips. Usually, the 27-foot Ryder is filled to capacity. That evening -- at what is known as the "boxing service" -- the truck is unloaded and the sanctuary is converted into a temporary food distribution center. Thursday, the USDA trucks arrive and the rest of the food is unloaded and set up. Food is distributed all day Saturday and then the church is put back together in time for Sunday service. Only boxes stacked behind the podium on Sunday morning give indication of the huge job that has been done the week before. More help is always needed if you are interested in getting involved in this rewarding community effort.

"In America today, no man,
woman or child should go
hungry. I commend the
efforts of Grace Fellowship's
fight against hunger."
