Doesn’t God sometimes allow sickness and disease to come on us so He can teach us something? This is a common objection that is heard regarding the subject of God’s will concerning healing. We need to answer this if we are to have unrestricted faith in believing God for health.
The primary way God wants to teach His children is through the instruction of His word. That is why a multitude of Scriptures, especially in the book of Proverbs, plead with God’s followers to attend to His word, listen to it, keep it in front of their eyes, and, most importantly, act on it, in order to be blessed in this life. When we fail to heed God’s word, we can step out from under His protection and make ourselves vulnerable to sickness and disease, but that does not mean it is God’s will for us to be sick. And it certainly does not mean that God wants us to continue in that sickness and disease. If we’ve disobeyed Him, He wants us to repent and be healed!
If you as a parent wanted to teach your child not to go in the street, would you push the child in front of an oncoming car to teach them how dangerous it was? You would be arrested for child abuse if you did. But if your child continued to disobey you and went into the street despite your repeated warnings and was hurt, would it be your will for the child to continue in his injuries in order to “teach him something”?
God is good. And God’s goodness is far better than any human goodness. Sickness and disease are not good. They are against the will of God. Can we learn while we are sick? Certainly. We usually give God our undivided attention when we are in desperate straits. But we can also learn while we are healthy and give God our undivided attention then so we can maintain good health and blessing. We don’t have to be wait until tragedy or pain comes to get serious with God.
God does not use sickness and disease as our teacher. He hates sickness and disease so much that He laid them on His Son by allowing Him to take bloody stripes that tore open His flesh and mangled Him beyond human semblance in order that you could be healed. (Isaiah 52:14; 53:5)
If you are outside of the will of God, repent! Turn around and go God’s way. It will mean health to your flesh and strength to your bones. (Proverbs 3:8) If you are walking with God, know that He is not the one making you sick, but the one who wants to heal you.
Confession: I am taught by God’s word. God does not use sickness and disease to teach me. He wants me to be well.
Scriptures for meditation: Proverbs 2-4; Isaiah 52:13-14; 53:5
